The Best Wedding Flowers for Hot Summer Days

Some flowers hold up better in the heat than others. If you're planning an outdoor wedding for the hot summer months, which flowers should you choose? In this Connecticut Post article, Eileen Fischer consults wedding planners and florists to provide brides with helpful suggestions on which flowers will stay beautiful all day and which might wilt and fade. Hint: orchids, roses and calla lilies are great; tulips, freesia and sweet peas are no-nos.

I decorated my first outdoor wedding 7/06/07. It was "almost" a disaster because alot of the flowers the bride wanted died under the 98degree heat!!! Luckily I am a fast thinker and also purchased too many tropical flower for the event to cover those that died. This is what I learned; You must give oriental lillies at least 3 to 4 day to open before the event, we ordered them from Sam's Club and they were 90% all closed! The few stargazers that we were able for force open died in the heat. Do not use alstomeria, they wilted. The roses did ok but you should not put them out more than two hours before the event starts.
The flowers that saved the day were bird of paridse, orchids, red ginger and orange calla lillies. We also purchased some spectactular tropical foliage that was ultra dramatic and saved me alot of embarrasement. We used areca palm, fan palm, banana leaves and monstera. What I learned: once exposed to the sun they must be in a water source like flora foam at all times or they will turn black in about one minute.....duh! Well, I didn't know, anyway I highly recommend flowersales.com if you want to use tropcials. They customer service was excellent and they saved my life. Hope this helps the next rookie wedding designer. Good Luck!
